This week we did not meet as a class, but we watched a movie based on a true story called “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” The movie tells the story of an author named Lee Israel. Israel was a New York Times bestselling author, but fell into hard times after her other books didn’t sell and her ability to write intriguing books went away. Because of this, Israel had to find another way to support herself and began to forge letters from famous writers. This helped her to become more creative. Israel found a purpose to her life and finally felt like she was worth more than what people thought of her. After a while, Israel was caught and sentenced to five years of probation. During her trial, she stated this was the best time of her life even though she learned that she was no longer a real writer.
I think that this movie is a good example of what may happen to someone when they put themselves in places that don’t benefit them. In the beginning of the movie, Lee was working in an office full of people that didn’t really like her. Of course her negative attitude is part of the blame, but I think that this environment and people like her publisher are why Israel ended up where she did. However, Israel said that she regrets none of what happened, so maybe this was meant to be.
